A White Plains elementary school food pantry distributed nearly 600 bags Friday to members of the community.
Volunteers tell News 12 they began packing the bags last night to prepare for the weekly giveaway at George Washington Elementary School.
According to the school’s Principal Laura Mungin, Feeding Westchester delivers six to 10 pallets that are broken down into 450-600 bags each Thursday.
Since each delivery is a mystery, Mungin says whatever the organization doesn’t deliver, the PTA donates.
Stations were set up to allow quick packing of vehicles and to enforce social distancing.
To ensure those without cars received food, a walk-up area was also put in place.
“This pantry has been here for three years, but because of COVID it's been expanded. So it's not only for our school, it's for the entire White Plains community,” says PTA Co-chair of the pantry, Laura Reidy.
The food distribution is accepting 10 volunteers per week. To sign up, visit their Facebook page.
Organizers say they will continue to serve the community every Friday from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m.
