Despite the rainy weather, dozens of same-sex marriage supporters showed up on the steps of City Hall in White Plains Saturday to take part in a nationwide show of unity.

The peaceful protestors denounced California's passage of Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state.

Robert Voorheis, of Yonkers, says he fell in love with his partner 30 years ago and married him in Canada in 2003.

"We are the only minority that can legally be discriminated in this country," he says. "We're the only ones left, and we're sick of it. We absolutely must have equal rights, equal access to the laws, and equal protection under those laws."

New York law recognizes same-sex marriages, but it does not guarantee gay spouses the same federal rights to which heterosexual couples are entitled. The only states to grant equal rights to same sex-couples are Massachusetts and, most recently, Connecticut.
