Nationwide, drivers are currently paying on average $2.81 for a gallon of regular gas, while in the Hudson Valley, motorists are paying more.

Many local gas stations are charging over $3 a gallon.

"We're now 30 to 40 cents per gallon ahead of where we were this time last year and probably 15 to 20 cents more expensive in the last 2 or three weeks," said AAA spokesperson Robert Sinclair Jr.

Several factors have driven oil prices higher. A growing economy means higher demand for oil, but because of production cutbacks last year’s supplies are low.

This combination could make this summer the most expensive driving season since 2014, according to experts.
