Garbage truck flips, shuts down Thruway in Hillburn
A garbage truck flipped over Friday morning in Hillburn and backed up traffic for miles on the New York State Thruway.
The southbound side of the Thruway was shut down for hours as crews cleaned up the accident. Rescuers say the driver of the truck hit an overpass. They believe the dumpster part of the truck was raised a bit. According to investigators, after hitting the overpass, the truck spun out of control.
"Flipped the truck over several times ? we lost a lot [of] oil and hydraulic fluid," says Lt. Craig Flanagan, of the Hillburn Fire Department.
Hazmat crews were on the scene to deal with the spilled oil, while Thruway engineers inspected the hit overpass for stability. The driver had to be cut out of the cab of the truck. He is being treated at Good Samaritan Hospital for non-life threatening head injuries.
All lanes have since been re-opened.
