Furniture maker puts his talents to use for the pope
A Mount Vernon furniture maker?s talents are being used for the most important job of his life -- the crafting of furniture the pope will use for his visit.
Henry Gargiulo grew up in the church restoration business. His company built the chair, altar and lecterns Pope Benedict XVI will use during his Mass at Yankee Stadium. Gargiulo and his employees say they feel blessed for the honor.
It is a blessing Gargiulo and his business received for a second time. They performed similar work for Pope John Paul II when he celebrated Mass at Yankee Stadium in 1980.
Gargiulo and his staff have been preparing for the Mass for weeks.
?We're just very proud to be part of this ceremony even though we only played a little part,? says Gargiulo. ?It's something special.?
After the Mass everything will be brought back to the shop. The pieces will then be donated to a church so the memory of the event can live on. Gargiulo says an important part of his business is to make sure history isn?t forgotten.
