Funeral held for volunteer firefighter
A young volunteer firefighter from Orange County, killed during a holiday house party, was laid to rest Friday.
Funeral services for Justin Speights, 20, were held at the Transformation Church in Middletown. The turnout was in the hundreds, with mourners brought in by bus, and loudspeakers set up outside for an overflow of people. After services, his casket was taken by procession to the Silver Lake Fire Department house where a final call ceremony was held in his honor.
Speights worked at the Silver Lake Fire Department and graduated from Pine Bush High School. He was stabbed to death on New Year's Day while breaking up a fight at a house party. He was posthumously promoted to lieutenant.
Silver Lake Fire District is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at (845) 344-5300.
