Friends and family paid a final farewell in Hartsdale Monday afternoon to a local lawmaker and civil rights activist.

The funeral service for Lois Bronz was held at the Church of the Sacred Heart.

Bronz, who spent a lifetime giving back to her community, died last week at 90. She spent decades as an educator, and had a long career in politics and activism.

In the early 1990s, she made history becoming the first African-American woman elected to the Westchester County Board of Legislators. She was elected the board's chair in 2002.

The Lois Bronz Children’s Center in Greenburgh is one of her lasting legacies.

Bronz will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings.
