Friends of Karen is pleading for donations to continue assisting families in need.
The nonprofit gives money to hundreds of families across the tri-state area to help with payment for lifesaving treatments, household bills and transportation.
Volunteers say donations are at an all-time low due to the coronavirus pandemic. The crisis has left several of the nonprofit's low-income recipients jobless and increased their need for help.
"It's heartbreaking to know when you're talking to these families that they don't only have to worry about will their child survive...that they're worried how they're going to feed their other children,” says Rhonda Ryan, of Friends of Karen.
Anyone interested in donating to the nonprofit can visit its website.
