Freshman students of Manhattanville College descended upon the school Friday as they and their parents weighed the debate about underage drinking on college campuses.
"I think they want the debate," says Manhattanville College President Richard Berman, referring to students' parents. "I think they've had trouble in their own home trying to figure out" how best to deal with the issue, he says.
If the legal drinking age is lowered to 18, most of the freshmen who moved into the college would be free to purchase alcohol at any local bar.
But some parents aren't worried because they say the debate has nothing to do with age and everything with how kids are educated - at home. "Teach your children, let them know the risks that they're going to undertake if they drink," says Lydia Perez, the parent of an incoming freshman.
Many at the campus agree with Perez. Those students who come from outside the United States, many times from places where the drinking age is 18, say that binge drinking and the dangers of drunken driving are issues that should be addressed at home before teenagers enter college.
