Freak July storm rips through Yonkers
Thousands of people were without power Wednesday after a wicked storm hit Westchester overnight, downing trees and power lines across the region.
The National Weather Service has officially categorized the storm as a downburst, with straight-line winds and hail. Residents in Yonkers had initially feared the powerful storm was a tornado.
Early Wednesday morning Con Edison reported that close to 21,000 customers were without electricity. By late Wednesday, the number of customers without power dropped significantly. Con Edison says nearly 300 employees and contractors were working to restore power.
