The New York Archdiocese announced Tuesday that four parishes and two more Catholic grammar schools in Westchester are slated to close down.
The closures are part of an ongoing realignment plan from the archdiocese. Slated to close are Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Margaret of Hungary, both in Yonkers, Holy Cross in Tarrytown, St. Stanislaus in Hastings-on-Hudson, St. Denis School in Yonkers and St. John the Evangelist School in White Plains. The archdiocese is also considering a list of possible mergers and new parishes to be built. A spokesperson says those plans will occur further north where populations are growing.
The archdiocese say the changes were made with heavy consideration and will better allow them to meet the needs of Catholic people in the area. The plans are still preliminary so pastors and principals will have plenty of time to meet with officials from the archdiocese in coming weeks. Last year, four Catholic schools in the county were closed.
