The city's Mayor is promising to make the investigation into an alleged drag racing incident that involved four Mount Vernon police officers a top priority.
Investigators say an off-duty female state trooper was injured Sunday when off-duty Mount Vernon Police Officer Robert Burke lost control of his car. Police received complaints of drag racing on North MacQuesten Parkway on Sunday. Officer Thomas Bendo responded to the call and found a single-car accident involving Burke and the female state trooper. Burke said he swerved to avoid another car. Two other off-duty Mount Vernon police officers were also at the scene.Officers Burke, Bendo, Leonard Cooper and Robert Wuttke have all been place on modified duty. Police are investigating whether Bendo followed proper procedures. Meanwhile, police have been unable to locate the car involved in the accident.
