Former inmate claims officer assaulted him
A former Rikers Island inmate claims he was sexually assaulted and beaten by a corrections officer back in July.
Bishme Ayers, 25, says he was beaten and sexually assaulted while laying handcuffed to a bed at Jacobi Medical Center. He says he was at the hospital for an epileptic seizure in July. He claims he noticed the officer seemed tipsy from drinking the night before the assault.
Ayers says his right hand was handcuffed to the bed and the corrections officer tied his other arm to the bed with a white sheet. He says he started screaming and crying for help as the officer beat and violated him with a nightstick.
Ayers' attorneys say he is not only suing the city for his pain and suffering, but he wants to make changes to how inmates are treated while in the jail system.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Corrections about the allegations. They sent a statement saying that while they cannot comment on specific litigation, they have no tolerance for violence and the safety of the inmates and staff is a top priority.
Ayers tells News 12 that he believes the assault was brought on from a previous incident in 2008, where he made complaints against corrections officers at Rikers Island. He also discussed the jail conditions and how poor they were.
