In Yorktown Heights, a two-alarm fire destroyed the home of a former firefighter Sunday morning on Moseman Road.

The Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department says the fire broke out just before 9 a.m. after the homeowner contacted his former colleagues to say his house was on fire.

All occupants were safely out of the home by the time crews arrived.

Fire officials say a deep fire on the second floor created zero visibility and rapidly deteriorating conditions inside the house.

High winds, bitter cold temperatures and frozen fire hydrants made firefighting efforts more difficult, forcing crews to bring in a water tanker.

A GoFundMe has now been set up to help the family, with the homeowner’s sister saying they lost everything in the fire.
