Firefighter union forced to relocate
A local Yonkers firefighters union has packed up and moved to a new location.
Local 628 had to find a new office after its School Street firehouse was deemed unsafe by engineers.
The ladder and rescue companies already moved out over a week ago after an engineer required the firefighters to move out for safety. The fear is that vibrations from the fire trucks could cause bricks to come falling down.
The union is temporary relocating to 470 Nepperhan Ave., the same building that houses fire headquarters. "We haven't been able to operate in this building at all because the building has basically been condemned. We are looking forward to moving in and resuming operations," says Firefighters Union President Barry McGoey.
McGoey says they are not sure how long the union will be relocated or the future of the School Street firehouse.
