A major warehouse fire in Suffern brought out most of the firefighting units in that area of Rockland County Saturday.
Tons of paper added fuel to the fire as nearly 75 firefighters battled to get the blaze under control at the Millenium Paper and Recycling warehouse on North Airmont Road. It took firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control with even more time needed to soak down paper and other debris to make sure the fire wouldn?t erupt again. Officials say the fire appears to have started in a bailer, which is a machine that turns mounds of recycled paper into neat parcels.
Traffic coming off at Interstate 287 was diverted back onto the highway for several hours. The Ramapo Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated and released five warehouse employees for smoke inhalation.
