A fire in the boy?s locker room forced the evacuation of 1,400 students from Mamaroneck High School Wednesday.
When firefighters arrived at the school on Boston Post Road around 12 p.m. flames and smoke were pouring out from the locker room. Smoke was billowing out from the first and second floors of the building, but firefighters were able to contain the fire to the first floor. The student body was taken to two nearby middle schools to get out of the rain.
Evening classes were canceled, but school is expected to resume on Thursday. The Westchester County Arson Squad is investigating to find out if the fire was an accident or possibly deliberately set.
