Fire damages iconic Rye Playland Park carousel
A Sunday afternoon fire damaged a historic carousel located in Rye Playland Park.
Flames shot out of the roof and lit the steeple of the carousel on fire while 30 people were on the iconic ride. No one was injured.
Park officials say the roof is damaged and some ride mechanics have been waterlogged, but they are optimistic the ride will reopen.
Officials believe the fire began in the ride's lighting fixtures.
Ride engineers will examine the carousel in the coming days.
The carousel has been in the park since 1928 when it was brought from Connecticut.
