Fire chief saves stabbing victim
A Yonkers woman survived an attack at the Irvington train station Wednesday night thanks to some fast-acting first responders, including the Irvington fire chief.
Irvington police are calling the attack a domestic dispute. The dispute involved a man and woman in a relationship who have children together.
Police don't know what the fight was about, but they say the couple had an argument Monday that was reported to police on Tuesday. On Wednesday, police say the male suspect tried to kill the woman.
Police believe he ambushed her and waited at the train station with a knife. They say he might have killed her if off-duty Fire Chief Chris DePaoli hadn't been there.
DePaoli grabbed a softball bat to break up the attack. Police say the man then began slitting his own throat until a police officer showed up and stunned him with a Taser. Police believe this action stopped the attack and saved the woman.
The victim has numerous stab wounds to her back and neck, and she required emergency surgery to save her life.
Police aren't releasing names, but they say the 36-year-old woman is from Yonkers. They say the man is 51 years old and from Mount Vernon.
No charged have been filed yet.
