Fire at Yonkers senior complex claims tenant's life
A fire at a Yonkers senior citizen complex claimed the life of an elderly tenant Wednesday.
The fast-moving fire broke out in the evening and was contained to the victim?s apartment. The victim?s neighbors and friends identified her as a 79-year-old woman.
Witnesses said they heard the alarm go off, saw heavy black smoke and smelled a foul odor. Some of her neighbors tried to run in and save her.
Friends described the victim as a gracious and kind woman. They said she was a person who would stop and open doors for her neighbors every chance she got.
One man in the complex, who tried to help the victim, is being treated for smoke inhalation. The Red Cross was on hand at the complex to offer support and resources.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
