Fiery tractor-trailer crash snarls traffic on I-95
A fiery explosion caused by a collision between two tractor-trailers resulted in major delays on Interstate-95 in New Rochelle Friday.
Fire officials say the fire started around 1:45 p.m. when one of the tractor-trailers heading northbound sideswiped the other truck, which was stopped on the shoulder between exits 16 and 17. The crash ignited the diesel fuel tanks on both trucks.
The two-alarm fire was a handful for the more than 30 firefighters dispatched to battle the blaze on the northbound side of I-95, according to New Rochelle Fire Commissioner Raymond Kiernan. He says fighting the fire was difficult because there is no water on the roadway.
Both truckers escaped unharmed. However, drivers on the northbound side found themselves trapped as traffic was stopped at the toll plaza.
Dousing the flames with water and foam, fire crews were able to get the situation under control around 2:45 p.m. Kiernan says the crash highlights the need for a water supply on I-95.
Some of the diesel fuel from the tankers leaked into a nearby brook, but fire personnel were able to contain it.To view chopper footage of the crash, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
