Federal corruption charges rock Mt. Vernon City Hall
More federal corruption charges were seen at Mount Vernon City Hall after the former planning commissioner was indicted the same day an alleged mob-connected carting company was charged.
Former Mount Vernon Planning Commissioner Constance Post worked for Mount Vernon for more than 20 years. She is now under a federal indictment, accused of steering more than a $1 million to a friendly contractor in a sweetheart deal.
Post is charged with helping a local businessman obtain money for various projects with the city, including funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Some of that money was allegedly used by Wayne Charles to renovate his apartment buildings in the city. Charles is the brother-in-law of Mount Vernon's former Management Services Commissioner Thomas Terry. Post allegedly received $30,000 from Charles in 2004. While Terry hasn't been charged, at one point Charles was using Terry's home address for several of his companies. According to the indictment, Post never revealed her personal and financial relationship with Charles. The news comes on the heels of another indictment accusing the owners of an alleged mob-connected carting company based in Yonkers of over-billing the city for $1.25 million.
The investigation came to light in October of 2007 when federal agents raided City Hall during the mayoral election campaign. New Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young says the allegations have led him to make changes at City Hall.
Post has taken a job as city redevelopment director in Stamford, Conn. So far she has made no comment regarding the indictment.
