Mount Vernon police are asking for the public's help after a young man was found shot on a street Tuesday.
Police say gunfire erupted around 8 a.m. at Jackson Street and South Fulton Avenue as business owners were opening their stores for the day. Officers found 21-year-old Dwight Findley, of Mount Vernon, with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He died an hour later.
Storeowners describe the area as generally quiet, leading some to believe that the shooting was not random.
So far, police have not released a motive, but they say the victim had a history of gun arrests. Investigators are paying careful attention to a vehicle with Georgia license plates, but they aren't saying whether it belonged to the victim.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call police at 914-665-2588.
