Family of Civil War veteran reunited with lost medal
The family of a Rockland Civil War veteran has been reunited with a Civil War campaign medal.
The medal belongs to the great-grandfather of 80-year-old Viola Silverman, who served in the Civil War from 1863 to 1865.
The great-grandfather, John Ferguson Pratt, never received his honorary medal because he passed away before it came out.
With the help of state Sen. David Carlucci, they were able to track it down more than 150 years after Pratt served in the war.
Silverman says she's overjoyed to be reunited with her great-grandfather's medal.
She also says she plans to dedicate it to her children and grandchildren.
Sen. Carlucci and Silverman are working with the government to get a dedicated headstone for Pratt.
