Family members of a Yonkers man who died in custody held a balloon release in his honor Monday night at the Yonkers Waterfront.
Patrick “PJ” Reddon, 37, was arrested last Sunday after an alleged domestic violence incident where he was charged with slashing two police officers.
Police say Reddon died on Sunday, a week after the arrest, due to an unrelated medical condition.
Family says Reddon had mental health issues and never got the proper treatment he needed.
Aliya Johnson, who has a child with Reddon, says mental health resources have been harder to find since the pandemic.
"There's no safe haven for them to go to anymore. It's important for them to have somewhere to go to. At one point, when PJ would not take his meds, he would go into the psych ward, and they would get him right, and then he would come out and he would be better,” Johnson says.
Reddon's family says he was a victim of domestic violence.
Police say there are no other charges involving the incident.
