Students returned to SUNY Cobleskill on Monday following the death of a student from Mamaroneck.
State police say 19-year-old Douglas Alvarez died from injuries suffered in a crash on I-88 in Oneonta. Reports say Alvarez was ejected from his car coming home from a night of partying.
On the SUNY Cobleskill campus, students who did not want to go on camera said his memory would live in their hearts forever.
Emelin Alvarez remembered her cousin as a one-of-a-kind guy whose smile always lit up the room.
"He had big dreams,” she said.
Closer to home where Alvarez spent much of his childhood, balloons were released into the sky on the Mamaroneck High School football field as dozens of former classmates came to remember one of their own.
According to his Facebook page, Alvarez was a star soccer player who was once a member of FC Westchester, a prestigious soccer club in the county. He had a legion of friends who took to social media to remember him as a person who made everyone smile.

A GoFundMe page set up to help his mother pay for Alvarez’s funeral has already tripled its goal in just one day with nearly $22,000.
