Jayson Negron’s family marked the six-month anniversary of his death with a call to action seeking justice Thursday.
His family and friends stood at the spot of his death in Bridgeport and posted flyers around town. Protesters claimed that police removed one of their flyers from a lamppost 45 minutes after they arrived. Arguing and a scuffle ensued, resulting in one of the protesters getting arrested for interfering with a police officer.
That protester has been released from police custody.
Negron, 16, was shot by police after a car chase, which police say started when they spotted a stolen vehicle. The driver, Negron, wouldn’t pull over, according to investigators, and the chase ended when officers boxed in Negron. What happened next remains unclear, although it ended in the teen’s death.
"They told everyone that Jason tried to run over an officer, and at this point I would like to see that Jason tried to run over an officer to justify what they did and the way they treated him,” said Jazmarie Melendez, Negron’s sister.
State police are handling the investigation. A spokeswoman declined to comment to News 12 because the incident is still under investigation
News 12 reached out to Bridgeport police for comment but hasn't heard back.
After the incident, Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez said the officer acted within the law and department policy when he shot Negron.
