Two Bronx families are unable to sleep in their own beds after the city Department of Buildings deemed their illegal apartments too dangerous for habitation.
The two small families were living in two makeshift apartments inside 1812 Lacombe Ave. They say they were taken out of the shelter system and placed in the apartments by the community-based organization BronxWorks.
Residents for several months were dealing with a falling ceiling and burning basement pipes. There were also bedbugs in the apartment, evident from bite scars visible on the legs of a young girl.
The families won't be allowed back into their apartments until the units are up to code. The Red Cross is providing them with assistance.
News 12 did not immediately hear back from BronxWorks for a response.
