Falling tree death raises concerns of road risks
The death of a Croton-on-Hudson doctor, killed when a tree fell on his car, has residents taking a second look at the risk of old trees along Westchester roads.
High winds once again whipped through northern Westchester Friday, causing a utility pole to snap in half. The day before, the wet soggy ground could not support a wind-blown tree on Furnace Dock Road in Cortlandt. It fell on top of a car being driven by Doctor John Corser, killing him instantly. His two children in the back seat survived. Many roads in northern Westchester are lined with trees. Residents complain there are too many trees close to the road that are rotted out. Residents say they fear what happened to Dr. Corser could happen to them.
According to Cortlandt Town Board member Richard Becker, the tree that killed Dr. Corser appears to have been on private property. He says the town does try to keep old trees on town property from becoming a hazard. Becker says the town has two certified arborists working for the highway department that survey the main roads.
Even with an ounce of prevention, some say nature sometimes has the upper hand.
