Fallen Mount Vernon firefighter laid to rest
Hundreds of mourners, including city and county officials, attended the funeral for Mount Vernon firefighter Kevin Townes earlier today. Services were held at the Grace Baptist Church at around 11 a.m., before which Townes' flag-draped casket was placed atop a fire truck for a procession through the city. Clergymen, fire officials and politicians such as Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young shared their memories of the 25-year veteran of the department. Townes, 54, collapsed last week while preparing to battle a house fire. Young told Townes' wife and children that the pain is mutual. "We share in your sorrow," he said. "For the city of Mount Vernon lost not only a brother, but a hero." Church leaders made note of Townes' devout faith and involvement in the religious community.
Other speakers emphasized his love of sports, and that the Pop Warner football team he volunteered for will start a scholarship fund for his children. For video of Kevin Townes' funeral procession and service at the Grace Baptist Church, click on iO Extra on Channel 612.
