Fair housing fight ends in Yonkers after 27-year battle
A fight for fair housing in Yonkers is finally over after a 27-year court battle.
In the 1980s, the courts found that Yonkers purposely segregated minorities in public housing on the city's west side. Nearly 30 years later, federal Judge Leonard Sand says the city has been providing ample affordable housing across the city. In fact, Sand says Yonkers not only met its goal, but ?radically altered the city for the better.?
With that in mind, Sand says the nearly three-decade-old suit doesn?t need to go further, and he will sign off on a settlement between the city and U.S. Justice Department and the NAACP, the suit?s filers.
While the court proceedings are over, there are plans in place to make sure the city maintains the affordable housing program.
