Explosion kills 2 contractors in Hastings-on-Hudson
An oil tank explosion killed two contractors in the village of Hastings-on-Hudson Thursday afternoon.
Fire officials say they received reports of the explosion at around 11 a.m. They say the explosion occurred outside a home at 65 Hillside Ave. near Farragut Avenue.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries. The contractors, who have not yet been identified, were working for Three D Industrial Maintenance out of Hawthorne. The company has not yet released a statement.
Officials say the two contractors were removing an old underground oil tank behind a home when it exploded.
Hastings-on-Hudson Police Chief Anthony Visalli was one of the first on the scene, and said the two workers could not be saved. He said the first officers on the scene provided CPR and attempted to resuscitate the men, but they were pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.
Despite the tank flying 75 feet in the air, no one else was injured.
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino surveyed the scene and called it a tragic accident.
An investigation is currently underway into why the tank exploded.
