Experts say this flu season could be the worst in years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports widespread flu activity in 46 states, including New York.

The New York Department of Health says there were 2,887 confirmed cases of the flu in the state during a one-week period ending Dec. 30. That’s a 66 percent increase from the week before.

Rockland County Commissioner of Health Dr. Patricia Ruppert says they are seeing an early peak this year, and that’s just one of the reasons experts are predicting one of the worst flu seasons in years.

She also says that the flu vaccine this year so far is not necessarily the greatest match for what they are seeing.

Ruppert says she got the flu last week, despite getting a shot, but believes that because she got the shot and immediately took flu medication, she was able to shorten the amount of time she was sick. She says she also had her family members treated to prevent the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 13 children nationwide have died this flu season.

To avoid getting or spreading the flu, it’s important to remember the 3 C’s: Cover your cough, clean your hands frequently and contain germs.
