Police in Mount Vernon are investigating the second murder there in less than a week.Officials say the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Shomari Knox occurred at around 5 a.m. Wednesday at South Ninth Avenue and West Third Street.Residents say they heard three shots fired, followed by a loud bang. Officials say the bang was the sound of a minivan slamming into a parked car. The minivan was sprayed with bullets and Knox was found inside.
According to residents, Knox was about to become a father and the family recently had a baby shower.
Another shooting occurred Aug. 8 a few blocks from Wednesday?s incident. Police say the two shootings do not appear related.
No arrests have been made, nor has a motive been released.
Mt. Vernon officials say they?re launching a plan to help stop violence in the area, as the number of homicides this year hit seven. Police and city officials plan to meet Wednesday to devise a specific strategy.
"Do not get caught with a gun. You will go to jail,? Mt. Vernon Mayor Clinton Young (D) says. ?We're going to be very aggressive about this, it has to stop."
