A former town supervisor in Orange was back at Town Hall Friday to return the office furniture he allegedly stole on his way out.
News 12 reported earlier this week that former Monroe Supervisor Harley Doles left his successor Tony Cardone with an empty office – allegedly stealing almost everything inside the office on his last day.
Cardone gave News 12 cellphone video of Doles' return trips to the office.
He said his first order of business as supervisor was notifying police of the bizarre alleged theft.
"I think when you're threatened with charges and the possibility of getting locked up, you're going to abide by the police," said Cardone.
Doles, however, said the whole thing was a misunderstanding and that he thought the furniture was his to take.
The former supervisor was largely unpopular among taxpayers during his time in town for allegedly pushing through plans to expand the municipality's Hassidic community of Kiryas Joel.
While he was initially voted in by Kiryas Joel voters, Doles was unable to get enough support from any group of taxpayers and didn't run for re-election.
Monroe police said all of the town's property has been returned and there will not be any criminal charges.
