Entergy: New IP sirens to be ready by August 2008
After repeated delays, Indian Point operator Entergy says its new emergency siren system should be ready by late summer.
Entergy has missed the last three deadlines in 2007. The delay in getting the sirens up and running has already cost the plant owners $130,000. The company could also face additional fines by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for missing the last deadline in August 2007.
Entergy says the sirens should finally be ready to go by Aug. 14.
The company was ordered to upgrade the system by Congress after the old siren system suffered repeated software failures, including several tests where sirens didn?t sound.
There have been complaints that the new system can not be heard in some locations. Entergy must now obtain permits from about a dozen communities to add new sirens to the system.
Both the NRC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency say they are aware of Entergy?s proposed deadline, but have yet to comment on it until they review the details.
