Last weekend's massacre at a Nigerian church is weighing heavily on one local priest.
Father Augustine Dejidada of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Elmsford says he preached at that same church where 50 worshippers were attacked by gunmen posing as congregants.
The shooting happened as they gathered to celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost, traditionally recognized as the birthday of the church.
During this week, the 7 a.m. Mass is being done to offer support for the people at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo. "We continue to support Christians in the wake of this. We're not deterred by this or deter people from loving their God. And going to church, we support each other at this time with prayers," says Dejidada.
"The whole school prays each day for the violence that is occurring in our country. We're especially horrified at what happened in Nigeria," adds Sister Mary Stephen, principal of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School.
This week, Cardinal Timothy Dolan called on the world community to take notice of a rising tide of anti-Catholic and anti-Christian attacks in Nigeria.
