Nearly 30 are homeless this morning after a fast-moving fire at an apartment building in Yonkers on Monday.
Fire officials say flames broke out at the three-story building at 14 Interval Place around 6:30 p.m.
Investigators say it appears that faulty electrical wiring sparked the fire, which then went into the walls and up to the roof. "When we arrived, we had a visible fire on the outside of the building on the first floor, we opened up and had fire on the first floor [and] it traveled up a pipe chase from the second floor to the third floor, we had fire on all three floors at one time," Yonkers Fire Battalion Chief.
Residents say they have had electrical problems in the building for some time. Keiona Canada, who lived on the first floor, says she saw the fire flare up outside her window. "The wire started sparking and then I looked down and it was in the windowsill and going up through the ceiling."
Investigators are working to figure out the exact cause.
There are no injuries to report. The Red Cross is now helping the fire victims.
