September is Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month and about 10,000 people suffer from the disease in New York State.

In the United States, about 100,000 people suffer from the disease.

In Yonkers, Assembly member Shelley Mayer and Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins gathered along with experts to inform the community about those affected by the disease Saturday.

Sickle Cell Disease is inherited and lowers life expectancy.

It targets the African Americans as well as Hispanic and Indian communities.
