Drivers take to the roads for Memorial Day weekend
Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and millions of drivers hit the road Friday to get to their holiday destinations.
With gas prices low and cabin fever high, AAA predicted more traffic than the nation has seen in a decade. Approximately 37 million Americans are expected to hit the road this weekend in search of barbecues and summer fun.
In the Hudson Valley, prices for regular gas range from about $2.89 a gallon to a high of about $3.15. Experts say to fill up now because those prices are expected to increase soon.
Drivers are also urged to take it slow and be alert this weekend. Memorial Day weekend is considered one of the most dangerous holidays to be on the roads because of drunken drivers.
The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety records almost 400 deaths from car accidents over Memorial Day weekend, with 40 percent of those because of drunken drivers.
