Driver in fatal Tappan Zee crash could face charges
The driver who allegedly caused a fatal, fiery crash on the Tappan Zee Bridge Sunday could face charges, according to authorities.
The Rockland County District Attorney's Office and New York State Police are investigating driver 19-year-old Steven Pinn, of West Harrison. Witnesses said Pinn's Mitsubishi was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before hitting a tractor-trailer, causing it to burst into flames around 7:30 p.m.
The driver of the truck, 42-year-old Ricardo Riveros, of New Windsor, hit another car before his truck overturned. Riveros was killed in the accident.
"He's gotta live with that fact now," said Central Nyack Fire Department Chief Shawn Healy. "Because of his actions ... a guy going to work ? probably for his family ? never came home."
An autopsy is underway on Riveros to determine his exact cause of death.
Authorities say Pinn did not suffer any injuries, however, his two passengers were hurt.
The accident brought traffic to a standstill on both sides of the bridge as emergency crews rushed to the scene. Drivers were forced to turn around and find alternate routes as officials shut down the bridge for about nine hours.
The New York State Thruway Authority replaced about 270 feet of the median barrier, but said the overall bridge structure was not damaged.
