Dozens of families in Yonkers are homeless - for a second time.

First, their Seven Pines Tower apartment building was destroyed by flames, and now the Red Cross is no longer paying for the hotels where they were staying.

Some of the residents needed to be carried out from the fire, as smoke filled the high-rise last week. Then hundreds of residents were given hours' notice they had to leave their apartments because it was being condemned.

The Red Cross paid for their hotels for a week, but many of the families affected by the fire say they are now on their own. Some say they can't go back to their home and they're going to have to pay for their own hotel.

The city of Yonkers says residents have been rejecting placement in shelters. The families say they don't want to go to a shelter due to fear of getting COVID-19.

The Red Cross says it has helped more than 100 families in the past week displaced from this fire, including covering costs for hotel, food and water. It says the help was supposed to be short-term, not long-term.

Dozens of tenants have told News 12 they've had trouble getting in touch with the building's management and have a different story to share.

Building spokesman Roy Stillman says they've been in their office at Seven Pines Tower the last several days ready to help everyone who came by.

"We're busting our rear ends to try to get this building back in shape so we can move people back in," says Stillman, who said when that'll be is unclear.

Building management says they don't have the contact information for all their tenants to call them directly, so they have been using fliers with ways to get in touch with them.

The building has waived rent for January.
