Dozens flee to shelter amid Mamaroneck flooding
(04/16/07) MAMARONECK ? Dozens of residents in Mamaroneck have had their lives nearly destroyed by massive flooding brought on by a nor?easter.
Many families were evacuated to an emergency shelter set up at Mamaroneck High School. That shelter is run by the Red Cross. The National Guard has also been called in to help with duties, such as directing traffic.
Although the floodwaters have started to recede and streets are being reopened, the power is still off. That?s part of the reason the emergency shelter has been kept open. Con Edison is also scouring the area looking for natural gas leaks.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer and County Executive Andy Spano were part of a contingent surveying damage throughout the area. ?We?re here to make sure they have everything they need to take care of the situation,? said Spano, adding that despite making every effort to get the area prepared, ?Mother Nature is a lot stronger than we are.?
Spitzer says the recovery efforts will take time. ?This is an ongoing saga,? he said. ?This will not be resolved overnight; it will take time to be able to inspect the homes, to be able to turn on the energy once again.?
Spano also said representatives from Sen. Hillary Clinton?s office were going to FEMA in an effort to acquire additional assistance.
