Mount Vernon education officials have announced that high school winter sports can go on thanks to $700,000 in donations.
Athletes and parents have been working to raise money for the athletic programs after two failing budget votes resulted in funding cuts. The money was collected in small and large amounts, from New York to California. An anonymous Westchester family donated $200,000 to make sure basketball, track and field, wrestling and swimming will continue at Mount Vernon High School.
Student athlete Breanda Crump calls the announcement a miracle and a reason for athletes to perform their best in their respective sports.
However, the district?s spring sports are not out of the woods yet. The district needs another $200,000 by January to save that season?s sports program.
