Doctors spread awareness of Zika virus across HV
Doctors at St. John's Hospital in Yonkers are spreading awareness about the Zika virus as the number of women contracting it continues to grow.
On Tuesday, a baby girl with Zika-virus related microcephaly was born in New Jersey, and doctors say there's potential for the virus to become problematic in the Hudson Valley.
"The warm weather is here and mosquitoes breed, and it is possible for mosquitoes here to acquire the ability to transmit Zika virus," says Dr. Peter Berkey, of St. John's Hospital.
There are more than 200 pregnant women with Zika in the United States. New York has the second-most cases.
There is currently no cure for the virus. Doctors say prevention is key.
"A woman who is contemplating getting pregnant and who is or going to, for example Puerto Rico, should probably not go and should not travel," says Berkey.

Doctors say if someone has traveled to a place where the virus is prevalent, they shouldn't plan a pregnancy for at least eight weeks after their trip.
