Dobbs Ferry's female top cop settles into job
Dobbs Ferry's female police chief settled into her job Monday as Westchester's first female top cop promoted from within her department.
While Monday marked Betsy Gelardi's official first day on the job, she said it's been a long time coming.
"I feel that I've earned it. I've been here for 22 years and I've risen through the ranks just like everyone else here," Gelardi said.During her earlier swearing in ceremony, Dobbs Ferry Mayor Joseph Bova said Gelardi is the right person for the job.
"It really didn't matter that she was female or male. It was because of her experience, her dedication to the village and our anticipation of her doing a great job," Bova said of Gelardi's appointment.
Bova also gave Gelardi a box of Advil for the tough days ahead.
Gelardi, who describes herself as camera-shy, said she's getting used to the media glare. She plans to keep doing her job no matter who's looking on.
