A popular Westchester County diner shut down for the weekend after some customers said they got sick there.

The Facebook page for the Mamaroneck Diner on Boston Post Road had customers commenting about becoming violently ill and vomiting after eating at the family-owned diner.  Some said they had to go to the hospital.

The diner said that it was a common virus, not a foodborne illness.  It said that with hundreds of people coming to the restaurant, there was no way to know where it started.

Additionally, it said that even though contamination in the store may have come back negative, the diner is being sterilized by a biohazard company as an extra precaution.

The diner was to reopen today but not all the employees have been cleared to return. Westchester County Health Department officials say the employees need to be symptom free for 72 hours before they can come back.

Loyal customers praised the move. "I would much prefer they made this decision than having everyone come in.... it's a good choice on their part" says Adrienne Shiefield, of Harrison. "It was definitely the prudent thing to do and we can't wait to have them back because it's a wonderful part of our community and it's a great place for family, friends and all types of gatherings," says Andrew Spatz, of Mamaroneck.

The Westchester Department of Health is asking anyone who has fallen ill since eating at the diner to call them at 914-813-5000.
