About 10 acres of land in Orangetown is now on the line as a developer aims to turn the land - home to vibrant wildlife - into town homes.

Neighbors who live on Gatto Lane along the town of Orangetown and Ramapo say they like the peacefulness, quiet and animals in the area.

Developer Toll Brothers is looking to buy the roughly 10-acre woodlands from the current property owner to build 40 townhouses for a 55 and over community.

It would need to be rezoned, as it is currently zoned for large-scale single-family homes.

Town Supervisor Teresa Kenny says the development would "offer a buffer" between towns and believes it's needed to retain senior homeowners in Orangetown.

Neighbors recently received a letter from the seller about encroachments on the property they want removed

"They're saying our fence is already on the property line, which means apparently we gotta come back this way," says neighbor Joan Johnson.

The project is in the early stages with no applications submitted to the Town of Orangetown, but neighbors are not wasting time trying to stop the development.

Families with concerns are encouraged to contact the town board. Its next meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m.
