Deportation looms for thousands of Salvadorans in the Hudson Valley

Dozens of people gathered at St. Peter's Church in Port Chester Monday seeking answers after the Trump administration announced an end to the temporary protected status for Salvadoran immigrants in the United States.
The Hudson Valley Coalition added the issue to its regularly scheduled meeting at the church. In all, about 200,000 people may have to leave the country. Thousands of them have lived in the Hudson Valley for more than a decade. 
They were granted special protection after an earthquake devastated their home country in 2001.
The Department of Homeland Security says conditions in El Salvador have improved since then. The decision follows President Donald Trump's goal to reduce legal immigration and increase deportations of undocumented immigrants.
As of now, Salvadorans who have lost their temporary protected status will have until September 2019 to leave the U.S.
