Democrats push back against Astorino's spending plan
Westchester County Legislator Catherine Borgia is pushing back against Executive Rob Astorino's spending plan.
In his state of the county address Wednesday, the Republican executive said he would not raise taxes.
"Our taxes are still too damn high. A tax increase is the last thing Westchester County needs," he said. Astorino says it will be the sixth year in a row he has fulfilled that pledge.
Borgia, a Democrat, says that's not completely true.
"The county executive's budget last year didn't raise taxes, but it raised taxes in the future. It borrowed money for operating, a lot of operating expenses," she said.
Some within Astorino's own party say that they would be willing to break ranks with the county executive if they believe the move would be fiscally irresponsible.
Republican Legislator Jim Maisano says that all options have to be on the table.
"The only people that I represent are the people of Westchester County and the people of New Rochelle and Pelham. And if the only way to balance a budget is to put tax increases on the table, that is something we'll have to look at," he said.
